Osama is hiding-out in Orgrimmar?

The Bush administration seems to think that Osama Bin Laden is in Pakistan. They are wrong. He is cowering behind the auction house in Orgrimmar. From there he leads a vast terror network stretching from Kalimdor to the Eastern Kingdom and even into Outland. When he and his followers aren't plotting the downfall of the West they are raiding Molten Core. As ridiculous as all of this sounds, that is what the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity group, a US government funded program, has come to believe.

The Washington Post did a story on the initiative back in February and Wired had a followup today on their Threat Level blog.

The gist of the report, which can be read here, is that Big Brother needs to infiltrate online games so that he can keep his vigilant eyes out for terrorists using them to recruit for or organize attacks. The report names several systems to look at, most notably, World of Warcraft and Second Life. While the report stresses the possibility of cyberterrorism, it leaves the door open for any sort of attack.

While no specific action was asked for, except to conduct more research, one could easily draw this sort of thinking out to its obnoxious conclusions.

Should IARPA seek to mine the chat logs of MMOs they are in for a truly monumental task. Sad news being that most of the chats sent are authored by bots and sound something like: "WTS Epic Lootz!1!1!!!" And most of the rest involved arcane dialects unique to each game: "Prots pls!1!1! Kthx." I can't help but thinking that there isn't much useful intelligence relating to national security to be gleaned from this sort of banter.

Players spreading the infamous World of Warcraft plague could easily be considered terrorists since what they did was, in effect, suicide attacks using biological agents. Would the government put them in Gitmo for that? Probably not. But they would likely have an awkward time next time they flew in the US.

Championship Kansans on Ebay

Apparently we do good enough work here at the Kansan since several people want to pay $25 for a copy on Ebay.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that, though the Kansan may be worth every penny of that $25, we are selling copies for 25 cents. Come in and get one. The first one is free with a KU ID so bring it along, unless you are Mario Chalmers.

The Rick-Roll re-imagined

Anyone who hasn't been living under a rock for the last six months is undoubtedly familiar with the rick-roll or the rick roll or the rickroll (AP still doesn't have an official style for the term, but expect one soon). The phenomenon has popped up on our beloved Free for All as well as a particularly funny April fools joke by Youtube. They replaced all of the normal front page links with rick-roll links. I discovered this wonderful rick-roll video via digg and I just had to share it.

Arnold cups Brazil

When a person becomes preeminent he is expected to have enthusiasms. Apparently Arnold Swarzenegger's enthusiasm was for women. This is all before Maria Schriver and that whole Governor of California thing, but funny nonetheless.

The following video comes with the complements of the Jayplay editorial staff.

Say hello to Hulu

In a classic example of coming in late to the party, a conglomeration of big TV networks have launched Hulu. It's a video streaming service with an impressive amount of otherwise hard to find content on offer. All the content on the site has been put up by its copyright holder so, unlike Youtube, it will be there next time you go and try to watch it again. TV shows and movies make up the bulk of the offerings, but some sporting events have been uploaded. You are subjected to mandatory advertisements periodically during videos, but the ads are ...

Super Smash Bros. Brawl unreadable on some Wii

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a big deal. It not playing on some Wii hardware is a bigger deal. Apparently the problems began last month when the game released in Japan. Around three precent of Japanese Wiis can't run the disk and instead give a disk read error when it you try and play it. Nintendo attributed the failures to dusty lenses on the lasers of the Wii's disc drives.

The video-game blog Kotaku did some reporting and found out that the fable was only true in a minority of cases. The bulk of the failures were brought on ...

Flash not coming to iPhones after all?

A few weeks ago I posted a rumor about Adobe's Flash coming to the iPhone Safari. That day may be farther off than anticipated. According the Apple Insider there are some serious issues with integrating the popular Web 2.0 tool. Most of the troubles seem to hinge around the fact that the iPhone and iPod touch represent a different sort of environment than on a traditional computer.

Apple has been pushing the power of other technologies such as CSS and JavaScript. While these are powerful tools and have the added benefit of my actually knowing how to use ...

The women's web?

According to the New York Times teenage girls are driving social networks. This fits nicely into my personal experiences, gleaned from interactions with a younger sister enslaved by MySpace and a girlfriend whose Facebook chats are of legendary size. What I don't know, is whether this trend represents a real shift in the gender make-up of the computer culture or whether it is just a fad that will blow over with Facebook and MySpace.

What do you all think? Are women invading the nerd professions to stay or can the die-hards just bunker down and weather the ...

Wacky wikis

The Internet has fallen to a plague of wikis. If you can imagine a topic, it probably has its own wiki. They may not be the most factually accurate source of information, they definitely suffice for solving simple interpersonal disputes (such as the exact length of an Executor Class Star Destroyer). For your enjoyment I have trolled the bowels of the Net to create this list of interesting wikis.

Wikipedia

The old standard. Perhaps not always accurate, but it can at least get you on the right track.

Flash coming to iPhones?

The Internet abounds in rumors surrounding Apple product releases and updates. The latest involves the iPhone OS and Flash. Word has it, not sure whose, that the software that created the web 2.0 revolution is coming to the iPhone. Gearlive started the story and they have some reliability since they were able to get screen-shots of the last update for the iPhone, version 1.1.3, before the public release of the update. Gizmodo has jumped on the bandwagon as well.

The update, should it come, could release as early as the end of the month when Apple releases ...
