And then, there were two.
North Carolina's loss to Maryland leaves only Kansas and Memphis as undefeated teams this season. Looking at the close games UNC had played recently, this wasn't difficult to see coming.
Incidently college basketball's main topic of conversation has been: who's better, Kansas or Memphis?
The coaches and the press say its Memphis. But ESPN's panel of college basketball experts voted Kansas No. 1 even before North Carolina lost. By the way, kudos to Baylor for FINALLY sneaking into the top 25 (the Bears deserved to be ranked for at least a month already). Baylor Basketball is this season's Kansas football. I'm serious, and have been saying so since I watched Baylor compete extremely well against top-10 team Washington State.
Kansas' ranking shouldn't change with this week's newest ESPN Power 16 poll, but it could, because three weeks ago North Carolina was No. 1, two weeks ago Memphis was No. 1, and this week Kansas took over for the first time all season.
So who has a better chance of going undefeated? Memphis plays in feeble conference USA, while the Big 12 is proving to be the deepest, best, and most balanced conference in the country so far. The edge here goes to Memphis, but it wouldn't be impossible for Kansas to run the table.
Either way, the regular season may be exciting, but once the tournament selection comes out, that's all that matters. This is when playing through the Big 12 will give Kansas an advantage.
On that note, at halftime of last night's Texas vs. Oklahoma State game, Digger Phelps said (in his usual incoherent ramblings) that Memphis was better because last season they needed a point guard and now they have one. He also said, "these teams have a common opponent, Arizona," but didn't adequately explain that point either, because each team played the Cats as close as the other, though Kansas had a less than healthy Brandon Rush. Whether it slipped his mind or ol' Digger didn't do his research, he failed to mention that Oklahoma was also a common opponent.
You may have heard what Oklahoma's coach said after his team's encounter with a fully healthy Kansas. It was something along these lines: They are easily the best team in the country, even better than Memphis.
But really, and here's the part where I contradict this entire post, who cares about the rankings? We learned this past season of college football how biased and ignorant the rankings are. I mean, how can the team with the best record of all BCS schools (Kansas at 12-1) and an Orange Bowl victory against Virginia Tech (with it's only blemish to No. 4 Missouri by 8 points) finish No. 7? But don't even get me started on all that BS!
This thing will play itself out in March, and we'll see who's standing then. And even if it's not Kansas (because the absolute best team in the country has AT MOST a 1/3 chance of winning it all), don't be surly, and appreciate what a tremendous basketball team coach Bill Self has assembled. This should be a helluva ride.
