Hip-hop stars seem far away from us. Like they have an entirely different set of genes.
They drive Maybachs. Live in Vail when they get sick of Rodeo Drive or the Hamptons. Walk the red carpet in dresses that cost more than, well, Maybachs.
Worst of all, they hang out with other celebrities, or at worst, pro athletes. They befriend them, date them and marry them. Celebrity genes rarely get the chance to mix with average people genes.
That’s why I love Alicia Keys. She’s bucking this trend. At least, according to the latest rumors. Keys is dating someone, someone who’s not so special in terms of fame. She’s dating an Austrian businessman. A regular guy.
Alicia Keys, the Superwoman, the owner of the prettiest voice, eyes, smile and complexion in hip-hop, can find love with someone who isn’t a public figure.
It’s beautiful. It’s unprecedented.
Take a look at other famous female hip-hop stars. Mariah Carey is married to Nick Cannon (He must’ve swept her off her feet with his Oscar-worthy acting skills in “Underclassman”). Beyonce to Jay-Z. Rihanna is dating Chris Brown.
Keys could be with anyone she wants. Instead, she’s with a businessman. From Austria.
This guy, Gernot Friedhuber, is a CEO and is probably rich. So it’s not like she picked a journalist or janitor or small-claims court lawyer or anything. But this is still progress. His name doesn't show up automatically when you start typing it on Google. He's not famous.
Maybe we should've seen this coming from Keys. She's always been the pure, sweet voice of hip-hop. She writes beautiful music. It's no surprise that she's not impressed with bright lights, movie credits or song lyrics and instead, is turned on by a man's personality.
It's like Keys sang in her song, "If I Ain't Got You," the diamond rings, the world - "everything means nothing."

Nicely done, Mark. Hip Hop is so concerned with making money and being flashy, they forgot about the music. I am also impressed with Keys, and appreciate your appreciation of the actual music aspect of the musical genre of hip hop.
