Getting to know the Virginia Tech wide receiver.

Between all of the hanging out on the beach, strolling through the happening streets of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and jollying in the “Orange Bowl Media Hospitality Suite” (they’ve got some tasty pretzels in that place), us members of the media actually do have to “work” from time to time.
Much of that work is time spent interviewing players and coaches; prying nuggets of knowledge from fellow college kids who are sometimes nervous, often weary and usually repeating frustratingly rote responses spoon-fed to them by coaches and higher-ups who want to avoid any controversial newspaper clippings.
But gathering quotes isn’t all bad. In fact, getting to meet and getting to know all different kinds of athletes is one of the pleasures of reporting. There are religious athletes, there are cocky athletes, there are hilarious athletes, and it’s always entertaining when one of them will open up, even for a few minutes in a crowded press room.
Sunday morning, I posed a few quick questions to Virginia Tech wide receiver Justin Harper. The 6-foot-4 senior, who has 37 catches and four touchdowns this season, supplied some answers and a small look into his life.
Q: Favorite movie? A: My favorite movie would have to be “Hoosiers”, even though it’s a basketball one.
Q: What’s been playing on your iPod recently? A: Jay-Z. Definitely Jay-Z.
Q:Funniest teammate? A: (junior quarterback) Cory Holt.
Q: What’s the first thing you think of when you think of Kansas? A: Um…open land.
Q: Favorite food? A: Lasagna.
Q: Most fun thing you’ve done in Miami? A: South Beach. We walked South Beach. That’s big, coming from a small town like Catawba, South Carolina. It’s big. We went down to the bowling alley and walked around a little bit last night.
Q: Who’s the best bowler on the team? A: I think (sophomore running back) Kenny Lewis. He’s pretty good. But I’m not that good. I just go bowl one time then walk off and come back a little later and bowl again.
