Home field advantage isn’t much of an advantage for the Kansas soccer team when it rains.
Kansas traveled to Topeka Friday afternoon to face Michigan in both teams’ official opener. The match ended in no one’s favor, as the game ended in a one-all draw after the second overtime.
Kansas coach Mark Francis said his team did a good job of adjusting to the astro turf at the field, despite the heat surging to temperatures of approximately 107 degrees.
Not exactly the ideal way to start the season, Francis said, but the heat did little to hurt the girls’ ability. It was simply the Jayhawk support they missed.
“From an atmosphere’s standpoint it hurts you,” Francis said of the rain-induced move to Topeka. “It’s not ideal going out there at 2 o'clock, not many people can come watch. It would have been a lot better at home at 5 o'clock.”
Kansas trailed the Wolverines 1-0 heading into the half. It wasn’t until the 59th minute that senior forward Caroline Smith put the Jayhawks on the board. Her unassisted goal put Kansas in a position to win, but the team could not capitalize on its opportunities.
The Jayhawks out shot the Wolverines 36-10 and also tripled their shots on goal, 15-5. Although the girls continued to get close, they could manage only one goal.
“We just didn’t execute in front of the goal,” Francis said. “We played a lot better than we did Saturday though. I was pleased with it being this early in the year.”
Francis went on to say that of the 15 shots on goal, 10 were solid chances at being the potential winning goal.
Sophomore forward Melissa Dobbyn scored her third goal in as many games to lead the Wolverines. In her first career start, sophomore goalkeeper Colleen Quinn allowed the goal. It would be the only one in her 110-minute start.
Paving the way for Kansas was Smith with her 43rd goal of her career. She tallied four shots on goal as well.
Continuing to be impressive was the freshman class. Freshmen midfielders Jenny Murtaugh and Missy Geha withstood the heat and played all 110 minutes of the match. Freshman forward Jessica Bush racked up three shots on goal, two of those being near game-winners in the second half.
“We played much better, which was good,” Francis said. “Our freshmen all played extremely well again. As long as we keep moving forward, we’ll be ok.”
Despite not coming up with the win, Francis still found signs of improvement in his girls.
“I thought we looked a lot fitter than they did. They seemed to run out of gas a lot quicker than us,” Francis said. “That is encouraging.”
