The Lawrence Police Department responded to multiple incidents at Abe and Jake’s Landing, 6th and New Hampshire, early Sunday morning.
Several eyewitnesses at the entrance of Abe and Jake’s said paramedics responded to a medical incident. Abe and Jake’s management said an individual fell from heights near the entrance of the bar. It is unclear as to where the individual fell from.
“(The individual) was removed from the bar; he was intoxicated,” Tyler Torneden, manager of Abe and Jake’s, said of the individual who fell. “He came down and it looks as if he tried to sneak into the back door, lost his balance, rolled down, fell off and hit his head.”
Torneden said the individual had no broken bones or serious injuries, after speaking with police.
Torneden said the individual was able to gesture obscenely to him after the fall.
Several fights broke out inside the bar as well. Torneden said there seemed to be no relation between the incidents.
“There were multiple fights (at bar closing time),” a Lawrence police officer said. “We have one injured and being checked out at the hospital. We had an individual fall from the railing apparently, and he’s injured and at the hospital.”
Torneden said several KU athletes were involved in breaking up the fights.
Basketball coach Kurtis Townsend, who also arrived at the hospital Sunday morning, said he was there because of an involved athlete.
“I know obviously something happened with Rod,” Townsend said. “I wasn’t there. I just got the call and came down here.”
Townsend said he received the call from a former KU basketball player. Graduated guard Aaron Miles and forward Moulaye Niang, who left the team because of injury, were both seen at Lawrence Memorial Hospital Sunday morning.
A spokesman for the Lawrence Memorial Hospital said sophomore guard Rodrick Stewart was not treated and continued to say she knew of no individuals admitted because of an incident at Abe and Jake’s.
