Bridge to West Campus getting repairs

The bridge over Iowa Street, connecting the residence halls to West Campus, has been under construction since the week of June 6, Joe Blubaugh, public affairs manager for the Kansas Department of Transportation, said.

“We worked really closely with the University to fix this after graduation and before the start of the next school year,” Blubaugh said.

Construction crews had to block off the road because of the narrowness of the bridge for workers, Blubaugh said.

Crews will patch the street, then give the road a new topcoat of asphalt, Blubaugh said. The main cause for the repair was the abutments, which are what anchor the bridge to the street.

The contractor hired for the job, Progressive Concrete Inc, has until August 5 to complete the work, Blubaugh said. Fines will be levied against the contractor for all work not completed by the August due date.
