KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The look of frustration on Jeremiah Massey’s face said it all as he left the court Friday night.
The Kansas State senior forward gave a helpless stare to an official, said something nasty underneath his breath and headed to the locker room after suffering the fifth loss of his career to Kansas.
It was easy to tell why he was upset, because Kansas is now even with Baskin & Robbins when it comes to serving up 31 flavors.
With last night’s 80-67 victory against the Wildcats, the Jayhawks own 31-straight victories against their in-state rivals.
“If I was in his shoes I’d of been frustrated, too,” Kansas junior guard Jeff Hawkins said. “I’m sure they thought they had a good chance to break that streak today.
For the last decade Kansas has absolutely owned Kansas State, and yesterday was no different.

It didn’t matter that Kansas State sophomore guard Lance Harris had a career-high 23 points, nor did it matter that the Wildcats were within three points with less than six minutes remaining in the game.
Last night’s Sunflower Showdown ended with the same result as every previous game in the series, dating back to January 17, 1994.
The game was met with high anticipation among fans, and last second tickets couldn’t be found for less than a hundred dollars. Kansas State's optimism began when it was announced that Kansas senior guard Keith Langford would not be playing because of an injured ankle.
Hawkins and freshman forward Alex Galindo stepped up in his absence, though, and the streak lived on.
“Losing to Missouri and Kansas State two games in a row wouldn’t have sat well with a lot of people around here,” Kansas coach Bill Self said.
Hawkins was the first of the two to have an impact on the game. The seldom used guard, who is normally inserted for his defense, played well from start to finish and scored eight points in his increased role. He knocked down two three-pointers in the first half, and also added three assists.
Midway through the first half, he had an assist or made a shot on four straight Jayhawk possessions.
“I think I played pretty solid in the first half,” Hawkins said. “I could have made a few more shots, but overall I was pleased with my effort.
Galindo came on in the second half and gave the Jayhawks solid minutes while junior forward Christian Moody was in foul trouble.
He scored five points in 13 minutes, and spent most of his time underneath the basket because Self chose to go to a small lineup and he was best suited for the job.
“I want to do everything possible to help us win the game,” Galindo said. “If that means I have to play in the low post than that’s what I’ll do.
After the game, Massey still had a depressed look on his face, as did the four other Wildcat seniors.
All five of them failed to defeat Kansas once during their days at Kansas State.
