Kansas running back dismissed from team after arrest

Kansas coach Mark Mangino announced that sophomore running back John Randle has been dismissed from the Kansas football team.

Lawrence police arrested Randle early Sunday morning and charged him with battery.

Between 1:51 a.m. and 1:55 a.m., a 21-year-old male and the suspect were involved in a verbal altercation inside It's Brothers Bar and Grill, 1105 Massachusetts St. said Sgt. Dan Ward, Lawrence Police Department.

The argument contined outside after the bar closed. A police officer witnessed the suspect punch the male, Ward said.

The officer approached the scene, attended to the victim and arrested the suspect without incident.

The male sustained injuries to his nose and cheek. Lawrence Douglas-County Fire Medical treated the victim at the scene and transported him to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Ward said.

Alcohol was believed to have been a contributing factor, but the nature of the argument was unknown, Ward said.

Randle, sophomore running back, was booked into Douglas County Jail at 2:46 a.m. Sunday morning on charge of battery.

As of this afternoon, Randle had not been released from jail and no bond has been set, according to Douglas County jail records.

Randle's first court appearance is scheduled for 3:30 this afternoon, at the Douglas County courthouse.

Mason Logan, Kansas Athletics sports information director, said that Kansas football coach Mark Mangino would have no comment on Randle at this time.

Randle was arrested in November 2003 on charges of domestic battery and criminal damage. The Douglas County District Attorney's Office didn't file charges for that incident because of lack of evidence.

In April 2004, a Douglas County judge ordered that Randle spend two days in jail for charges of attempted theft, disorderly conduct and possession of a fake driver's license. Those charges stemmed from two separate incidents in November 2003 and March 2004.
