Max Falkenstien, legendary University of Kansas broadcaster, will be honored today by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius for his service and contribution to the state of Kansas.
Falkenstien, 81, who retired from the broadcast booth in March after 60 years covering football and basketball, will receive a Kansas flag that was flown atop the state capitol building. The ceremony will take place at 9:20 a.m. in the Governor’s Ceremonial Office.
“You know more about it than I do,” Falkenstien said when asked about how he felt about receiving the honor from the governor. “I better wear a shirt and tie.”
Falkenstien said that Jim Marchiony, associate athletics director, contacted him several weeks ago and asked if he could attend a ceremony April 26 at the capital. He said Marchiony told him the House and Senate would be honoring him.
“I told him I’ll be there,” Falkenstien said.
Sebelius said in a statement about Falkenstien, “His dedicated professionalism and genuine enthusiasm have made him an invaluable Kansas ambassador as he has touched people throughout the country in person and on the air while covering his beloved Jayhawks.”
