After six plus seasons as the coach of the Missouri Tigers, ESPN is reporting that Quin Snyder is stepping down.
This came one day after Snyder told reporters he would not resign in the middle of the season, and that no one from Missouri athletics had told him his job was in jeopardy.
Missouri is 10-11 on the season and is 0-6 since beating Kansas on Jan. 16. Kansas coach Bill Self said he was disappointed, but understood that it had to be done.
“I’ve known Quin a long time, and I hoped he would have been given a chance to finish the season,” Self said.” I think he is a good person. I hate that for anybody in the profession.”
Self and Snyder have known each other since 1986 when Self was a coach at a summer basketball camp in Lawrence and Snyder was a counselor. The two were roommates together that week.
In his six seasons as head coach, Snyder compiled a 126-91 record. Snyder started his career as head coach as well as anybody in the history of Missouri basketball. He reached 100 victories quicker than anybody in the program and qualified for four straight NCAA tournaments to start his career.
Since then, Snyder and the Tigers have qualified for back-to-back NIT tournaments and have had problems with NCAA eligibility.
Associate head coach Melvin Watkins will take over the team for the rest of the season.
"What he told us is, it's an opportunity to get back to playing basketball. All the speculation was a heavy burden," Watkins said to the Associated Press.
Snyder, who played at Duke and was an assistant to coach Mike Krzyzewski, was hired to replace the retiring Norm Stewart and take Missouri to national prominence. He had 20-win teams in three of his first four seasons, including an appearance in the Elite Eight.
But since then, things have turned sour. The once-proud program is 42-42 since then and attendance has plummeted despite a new arena that opened last season.
