Unleashing a dominant offense, Kansas (5-1) buried No. 19 Stanford (3-1) 8-2 Friday night to open the three-game series in Palo Alto, Calif.
Kansas trailed by two runs until the sixth inning, but tied the game at two to end the frame.
The Jayhawks scored six more unanswered runs in the final three innings.
Senior right fielder Gus Miler drove in two to tie the game at two apiece in the top of the six. Milner was also responsible for the final two runs, blasting a two-run shot in the top of the ninth inning.
Junior pitcher Sean Land (2-0) threw for a career-high seven innings and allowed two runs on three hits. He struck out four Stanford batters and allowed just one walk before senior closer Don Czyz replaced him to start the eighth inning.
Seniors Jared Schweitzer and Ritchie Price came up mightily for the Jayhawks, each with a pair of hits. Schweitzer hit for two RBI and Price had one.
Davis Stringer (0-1) took the loss for the Cardinal. Starting pitcher Greg Reynolds hit bad luck, getting a no-decision after a six-inning start. He surrendered two runs on five hits and struck out nine KU hitters.
The Kansas victory was the first against a ranked opponent this season and its first victory against Stanford in the series' three-year history. Game two of the series will begin Saturday at 3 p.m.
