Kansas makes it two in a row against Stanford

Kansas (6-1) defeated No. 19 Stanford (3-2) for the second straight time on Saturday, 5-4. This clinched the series for Kansas, even before Sunday’s game is even played.

Senior pitcher Ricky Fairchild (2-0) allowed three runs on four hits in his five-and-one-third innings of work. Senior closer Don Czyz sealed the ninth inning for his third save of the season.

Kansas coach Ritch Price, who came to Kansas from California four years ago, said he recognized the rich baseball tradition of Stanford.

“Being from the west coast, Stanford’s always been a national powerhouse,” Price said. “To come out to my home state and win against them is big.”

Stanford scored first for the second night in a row. Errors plagued the Cardinal tonight, though. A pair of Stanford errors allowed senior centerfielder Matt Baty to score in the top of the third inning to tie the game at one.

A four-run fourth inning proved huge for the Jayhawks, who hit a pair of home runs in the process. Sophomore second baseman Ryne Price and freshman catcher Buck Afenir led the offensive stand, each putting out two-run shots. The four runs were all Kansas needed to seal the victory.

“One through nine, we may be as good as anybody in the Big 12,” Price said about his come-from-behind hitters. “To do that, you have to find a way to win games late.”

The series wraps up tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Sunken Diamond in Palo Alto, Calif.
