The Kansas softball team opened the 2006 campaign with two victories in the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational in Houston.
Kansas shut out No. 19 Florida, 6-0, and run-ruled Texas A&M-Corpus; Christi, 15-1, in five innings.
Senior shortstop Destiny Frankenstein carried the Jayhawks with five RBI, four runs and three hits on the day. She hit a home run in each game.
In game one against Florida, the Jayhawks were able to capitalize in the second inning off an RBI single by sophomore outfielder Betsy Wilson to drive in Frankenstein, who led off the inning with a walk. Kansas scratched across two more runs in the third inning off of two Florida errors. Carrying a lead into the sixth, Frankenstein and senior designated hitter/pitcher Serena Settlemier hit solo homeruns to give Kansas a 5-0 lead. The Jayhawks added one more run in the seventh inning to seal the victory, 6-0.
Junior pitcher Kassie Humphreys (1-0) struck out 10 batters, walked one and allowed five hits for the victory. The Jayhawks had eight hits off of three different Gator pitchers.
With one victory in the books, Kansas faced Texas A&M-Corpus; Christi in the second game of a doubleheader. Kansas carried a 3-0 lead against Texas A&M-Corpus; Christi into the bottom of the third inning when the game was suspended due to rain. When play resumed, the Jayhawks put up eight runs to close the third inning.
This type of run support was more than enough for Settlemier (1-0). She allowed only three Islander hits and pitched a complete game in five innings of work. The game was called after five innings because of the excessive run rule. Kansas was up 15-1 at that point.
Settlemier was dominant, striking out 12 Islander batters on the day.
Kansas will continue its tournament play Saturday at 5 p.m. with a doubleheader against Houston and Texas A&M-Corpus; Christi.
