The Kansas Jayhawks got revenge for last month's loss to the Missouri Tigers on Saturday, topping the Tigers 79-46 at Allen Fieldhouse.
The game was never in doubt, with Kansas jumping out to a 16-2 lead early and never allowed Missouri back in the game.
The victory was Kansas’ ninth straight and put the Jayhawks one victory away from playing Texas in what could potentially settle the Big 12 title next week.
Kansas got the majority of its production from its three starting guards. Sophomore Russell Robinson, along with freshmen Mario Chalmers and Brandon Rush combined for 37 points.
The Kansas defense also dictated the pace, holding Missouri to just 31.9 percent shooting, aided by a stretch in the second half where the Tigers missed 17 consecutive shots.
“When you get a team down you need to keep them down,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “They shot the ball bad, a large part due to us a large part due to them just missing shots.”
Robinson was key on the defensive end, forcing six steals, and helping Kansas force Missouri to turn the ball over 21 times.
Kansas also dominated the boards, outrebounding Missouri 41 to 20.
“We played aggressively and good on the glass obviously,” Self said.
Rush scored 11 first half points, but spent some significant time on the bench in the second half due to the lopsided score. Rush finished with 13 points.
Chalmers was hot from outside, hitting four of eight three point attempts.
Missouri’s Thomas Gardner, who scored 40 points in the first get-together in January, was held to just 15 points on 5 of 17 shooting.
“The Jayhawks were at their best today. They made shots and turned us over,” Missouri interim head coach Melvin Watkins said. “I thought we could overcome that. We were just trying to play uphill and it was very difficult for us today.”
