Jayhawks weather the Cyclone storm

AMES, Iowa -- Five players in double figures led the Kansas Jayhawks to their third straight victory, topping the Iowa State Cyclones 95-85 on Saturday.

Freshmen guards Mario Chalmers, and Brandon Rush, along with sophomore guard Russell Robinson combined for 59 points, while forwards Julian Wright and Darnell Jackson each scored 13.

Robinson played just nine minutes in the first half after picking up two quick fouls and just three points. In the second half, like he did against Texas A&M;, Robinson took control of the game and scored 15 more to lead Kansas to victory.

The Jayhawks began the first half hot, jumping out to a 12-point lead when Robinson left the game. From that point on, though, the Cyclones took over and cut the Jayhawk lead to just three at intermission.

“When you are up 12 and have control of the game, I am not going to risk him getting his third foul because I thought there was no way for us to win the game without him down the stretch against their pressure,” Kansas coach Bill Self said.

Turnovers plagued the Jayhawks in the first half. The Jayhawks had 13, which enabled the Cyclones to get back into the game.

It was another second half run that sparked Kansas. The Jayhawks brought their lead to as many as 16 points with a 17-3 run, but the Cyclones responded with a 10-0 run of its own to cut the Kansas lead to eight. With Robinson’s clutch shots and key defensive stops, the Jayhawks never let the lead slip out of their hands. Kansas never trailed in the game.

“The second half he was great,“ Self said of Robinson. He keyed our run in the second half to get us off to a pretty good start.”

The hot shooting that Kansas saw in the first half, continued in the second, and for the entire game Kansas shot 58 percent. For the second straight game, Kansas shot well from the free-throw line, connecting on 30 of 38 attemps.

“I thought we came back at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half, but then we made some turnovers and shot ourselves in the foot,” Iowa State coach Wayne Morgan said.

Robinson and the rest of the Jayhawks were able to hold Cyclone starters Curtis Stinson and Will Blalock to just 13-36 shooting. Kansas continued its great defensive pressure holding Iowa State to 37.7 percent from the field.
