Letter to the Editor: Inappropriate to run cartoon

While the bill granting in-state tuition for children of undocumented immigrants has been upheld in the Kansas House of Representatives, I find the cartoon by Kelli Sparks published the day before the decision to be both offensive and in poor taste.

The cartoon of two female students, one “obviously Hispanic” with dark hair and the other blonde was stereotypical to say the least. The Hispanic student only said “No English” which is absurd and perpetuates the stereotype that immigrants cannot speak English well or at all.

If the student in the cartoon was in fact granted in-state tuition as depicted, they would have had to have attended high school for at least three years in Kansas and graduated or received a GED. Unless our school system is failing, the graduate would be able to form a grammatically correct sentence. Portraying Hispanics in this way insults their intelligence and only serves to make people upset about the in-state tuition bill.

Please hire a new cartoonist or find a way to make a statement in an opinion cartoon without demeaning an entire community.
