The Kansas softball team advanced to the championship game of the Big 12 Tournament Friday afternoon with a 2-0 victory against No. 14 Nebraska in Oklahoma City.
The sixth-seeded Jayhawks will play either the second-seeeded Oklahoma Sooners or seventh seeded Missouri Tigers in the title game Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net. It marks Kansas first appearance in the Big 12 championship game in school history.
Kansas has now won a season-high five straight games, including two against ranked teams.
“I think we were due,” senior shortstop Destiny Frankenstein said. “Now we’ve got everything going and we’re real relaxed.”
Frankenstein scored both of the team’s runs in the fifth and seventh inning.
Frankenstein recorded the Jayhawks’ first hit of the game in the fifth inning by laying down a bunt and beating out the throw at first base. Senior second baseman Jessica Moppin’s sacrifice moved Frankenstein to second base. She then advanced to third base after a single by senior right fielder Heather Stanley. Frankenstein scored the team’s first run after senior left fielder Nettie Fierros reached base on an error.
Frankenstein scored Kansas’ other run in the top of the seventh inning. She reached base on a fielder’s choice and then stole second base during the next at-bat to move into scoring position. Frankenstein then advanced to third on an error by Nebraska catcher Jaime Waldecker. She scored after Stanley reached first base on an error by Nebraska second baseman Jessica Yoachim.
Junior pitcher Kassie Humphreys, who has pitched well against the Cornhuskers this season, pitched one of her best games of the season on Friday. She allowed three hits and struck out seven in the complete game effort for her 16th win of the season.
“They way Kassie and Serena have pitched in this tournament has really helped us relax our bats a lot,” Frankenstein said.
Kansas won two games on Thursday to advance to the semifinals against Nebraska. The team defeated third seeded Baylor 5-1 and seventh seeded Missouri 2-0.
