Letter to the Editor: Birth control should be affordable

Raising the price of birth control an unconscionable act on behalf of the University and pharmacies.

I was shocked to read “Birth control prices get knocked up,” informing me my alma mater was going to be hiking up the prices of contraception for students. It absolutely baffles me that pharmaceutical companies and Medicaid would allow this to happen in the current political climate of anti-choice in the context of abortion.

Birth control is the most effective tool against unwanted pregnancies and unnecessary abortions for those that are sexually active.

Birth control is the most effective tool against unwanted pregnancies and unnecessary abortions for those that are sexually active. The cost of birth control over time is cheap compared to the other far more expensive sexual consequences. That still doesn’t mean that pharmaceutical companies should take advantage of this to exploit students and the economically disadvantaged. Regardless of abortion viewpoints, and perhaps even because of them, birth control should be more affordable and more widely available for all women.

It should also be noted that in case a female student forgets to refill her newly expensive birth control, pharmacies are required to carry emergency contraception behind the counter, which can be obtained without a doctor’s prescription.

This pharmaceutical/Medicaid contractual obligation should be fought for the sake of women’s reproductive health and freedoms. I urge KU students to write their Congressmen, and express their concerns with the administration of the University. This is absolutely unacceptable.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Abstinence before marriage is the most effective tool against unwanted pregnancies and unnecessary abortions. Suck it up, champs. That's what marriage is for.

Heh... too bad statistics show too bad abstinence focused programs are inneficient, and hurt more than help. Oh, and abstinence is only 100% effective when it's perfectly followed... good luck with that in a town full of hormonal ticking bombs that burst off anytime alcohol shows up.

Hawk

What other birth control is 100% effective when it is not perfectly followed? For that matter, what other birth control is 100% effective even when perfectly followed?

As to my response to the actual letter:

Birth control is very cheap. BUY CONDOMS! But just like everything else in life, the cheap option is not necessarily the most desirable or convenient. I believe that no person should go hungry, but that doesn't mean steak houses can't charge 50 bucks for a meal or saffron can't cost $3,000+ a pound.

I will second Hendrix321. Sexual activity is reserved for marriage between a man and a woman. Unfortunately, the world we live in is accepting sexual promiscuity as the norm. "Wrong, Wrong, Wrong! Sex between a married man and woman is sacred and special. I promise you that your marriage, when that day comes, will be that much more rewarding if you practice abstinence now. But don't take my word for it, try it out for yourself. :)

You do realize that marriage is not an institution founded on love. It might of evolved into that, but only recently.

Do you also realize that marriage is a legal institution that has nothing to do with love nowadays. Abstinence education is detrimental to American society as it provides more of a ignorant youth who will probably participate in sexual activity without protection thinking that everything will be dandy.

Educating people about sex and STIs that are associated with it is the best route to go because people are more likely to be protected when they have sex. People are going to have sex anyways despite religious fervor to try and stop it. At least with education, you can protect more lives and reduce the numbers of STIs.

"Sexual activity is reserved for marriage between a man and a woman."

Says what law?

Probably your religion, which has likely changed faces many times in the past 150 years.

Get over yourself, and get off your damn high horse. You're right, a generation of dumb teenagers that know nothing about STI's and birth control is just going to magically be "morally upright" like yourself. Advocating ignorance is poor practice.
