On any other day, couples making out on Wescoe Beach may have been advised to get a room.
But sloppy kisses and loving embraces Monday were part of Queers and Allies Kiss-In event, one of 10 events celebrating Lawrence Pride Week at the University.
Only two couples locked lips on and off, but Jonathan Pryor, Columbus, Kan., senior and director of Queers and Allies, said making out with his boyfriend David Ta, Wichita senior and Queers and Allies events chair, was a demonstration to promote visibility of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
“Even if it’s just two couples, it’s activism,” Pryor said. “It’s no different than straight people holding hands walking down the street.”
Another couple, Bethanie White, Independence, Kan., senior and co-social chair for Queers and Allies, and her girlfriend Ashley Shawgo, Overland Park senior, said they made out on Wescoe after they had planned not to.
“They asked us to,” White said. “We don’t have any problem with PDA, just not as a display.”
Queers and Allies also distributed information to passers-by and sold T-shirts that read, “Gay? Fine by me,” to raise money for the Donate Against Hate campaign. The campaign is a project intended to stop organizations like the Fred Phelps church group from protesting funerals, said Ryan Campbell, Olathe senior and student senator for Queers and Allies.
Campbell said Queers and Allies has sold more than 100 T-shirts at $10 a piece in the past, and that he expects more to be sold at some of the upcoming pride week events.
Tonight at 7:30 is a lecture with sex columnist Dan Savage at Woodruff Auditorium in the Kansas Union.
“I’ve read some of Dan Savage’s stuff,” Pryor said. “He’s a very blunt guy and vulgar and I think he works well with a college crowd.”
There will be a panel discussion tomorrow at the Kansas Room in the Kansas Union at 7:30 p.m., presented by the Service Members Legal Defense Network regarding the, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” military policy, followed by a social event at 10:30 p.m. at Liquid Bar and Nightclub, 804 West 24th St.

Thursday at 6:30 p.m., the organization is sponsoring the Queer Awards Banquet at Maceli’s, 1031 New Hampshire St., which honors people who have contributed to the LGBT community in Lawrence.
Friday is the Brown Bag Drag in front of the Kansas Union at noon, and the week culminates with an AIDS walk, followed by a pride march on Massachusetts Street.
Stephanie Bottoms, Omaha, Neb., senior and Queers and Allies communications director, said the pride march was organized to promote diversity and for the LGBT community to be visible in Lawrence.
“Pride week is a good way for LGBT individuals to celebrate something that usually causes them to be discriminated against,” she said.

I'm curious to know if JoshuaTurk and NeoPran follow every rule in the Bible, or just the ones that appeal to them? Do you follow Lev. 20:9, "Anyone who curses his father or mother shall be put to death"? Or how about preventing priests from shaving their beards? (Lev. 21:5) Or how about my favorite, Lev. 25:44: "Slaves, male and female, you may indeed possess"? Following that one too, are we?
If you're going to take a book that seriously and literally, don't cherry pick. Take it all. Or at least recognize that the Bible is a loosely accurate record of an oral history shaped by thousands of agendas over centuries. Lighten up.

Um, I can tell you don't know much about what the Bible says. There is a ceremonial law that was given to the Israelites. There are also some things that God allowed but did not approve, slavery and divorce are a few examples. However, the moral law in the Bible is constant throughout all time periods. Homosexuality was condemned before Moses (during Abrahams time), after Moses, and during the New Testament times too. So, quoting the verses about homosexuality is not cherry picking... sorry to dissapoint you.

PS Go to Israel, towards the south of the Dead Sea, you will find the city of Sodom and Gomorrah... destroyed by ball of sulphur that fell from the sky... it's not a fairy tale, it's real history. Also, after you die, you are going to give an account of your actions to God, whether you believe that he is real or not.
There are no atheist in heaven (or hell). After you die you'll be a believer.

For all intensive purposes, I would say this story is newsworthy. Sure, it happens every year, but that doesn't mean it is not significant. People are fired up about it. We are in Kansas people, not San Fran. This is big news.
In addition... COME ON! I am religious too, but I am not going to publicly denounce homosexuals with bible quotes. What ever happened to Christian love? These are real people with real feelings and beliefs. You don't have to agree with it (and I am not saying I do). But what makes you think you are going to convert them by saying that God smites them?

I made no reference to the Bible because of exactly what you posted. There is too much contention when using it and contention is of the devil.
I sympathies with people that suffer from alcoholism, homosexuality, drug abuse, etc. These illnesses are an unfortunate part of many lives and destroy as well. I myself suffer from an addiction, and I feverishly work on gaining control over it everyday.
As I said before, these illnesses are recoverable. There is plenty of help for all.

You can't really fight people like these. Whenever God gets mad at the gays and the feminist, some foreign country gets blown away or some baptist church gets blown away by a tornado.

The addictive behavior is a really old argument that was debunked a long time ago. People aren't read up on it. When someone is "cured" from alcoholism they usually won't touch the stuff anymore. The "cure" for homosexuality, they claim, is through prayer and other bull that the insecure heterosexual male puts on the gay male because he is insecure. When that gay persons falls time, and time again and again and again, that's not what you call an addiction, it's called being.
Oh yeah, those Bible stories that you interpreted can be easily reinterpreted to favor gay people. I know you won't listen, but you can't and won't.

B) The sins of S&G were most certainly NOT homosexuality.
For being the fricking Pastor of a church you'd think you'd be able to have a discussion on the Bible without resorting to lies and misinformation.

We are all given the wonderful gift called "freedom of choice." We are also all given the ability to love and to love anything we want. Hevenly Father did not grant "Gays" the ability to love, he granted us human beings the ability to love.

Although it is not surprising, you completely miss my point. I wasn't asking for a half-baked definition of what the ability to love is. Go tell it to a Troubador. Here, I'll restate the question so you can understand it better. Why are homosexuals created with feelings that the Creator supposedly (according to your misreading of the Bible) condemns? And please refrain from amusing us with stories about the wonderful gift of love, an answer to the question would suffice. "Please...love everyone for that is what we should do and this world would be a much better place." This coming from the same stupid prig that called the love my partner and I have for each other a sickness.
