NEW: Mizzou's upset bid falls short

Missouri did all it could to upset sixth ranked Kansas and reward new coach Mike Anderson with his first Big 12 victory.

The Tigers out rebounded the Jayhawks, shut out sophomore forward Julian Wright in the second half, and led by as many as five. It still wasn’t enough as Missouri fell to Kansas 80-77 on Monday.

“Nobody outside of our locker room believed in us in this game,” Anderson said, “but our guys think we can play with anybody in the country.”

In each of the Tiger’s first three Big 12 losses they were dominated on the boards, opponents averaged 15 more rebounds. That was not the case against Kansas as Missouri actually won the battle, 43-42.

“There was an emphasis on it,” junior forward Marshall Brown said, “Everybody was focused on getting every loose ball.”

It was the lethal duo of Jayhawk freshmen Sherron Collins and Darrel Arthur that put away the Tigers in the end.

Collins set a career-high of 23 points and tied a career-high of four three pointers. Arthur was relatively quiet for most of the game until the Jayhawks needed him most. With just under six minutes remaining Arthur had six points in two minutes to regain the Kansas lead.

“We were keying in on guys like Brandon and Wright,” Missouri sophomore guard Matt Lawrence said, “but those two are McDonald’s All Americans and might be freshman but they can play the game.”

Lawrence had a team-high 19 points including four three pointers but as a team, the Tigers struggled with their perimeter shooting. They shot only 23% from beyond the arch.

“I think we jacked it up there way too many times trying to put them away.” Lawrence said.

Kansas shot well from three point range. In addition to Collins’ four, Rush and junior guard Russell Robinson each hit a pair.

The biggest three pointers came at the end of the game when Collins stepped up to knock down two in a row to put the Jayhawks up 76-72 and electrify the crowd.

Lawrence made one of his own on the ensuing possession to diminish the lead to one with a minute and 20 seconds to play. Appropriately, it was Collins and Arthur that made the two field goals in the last minute to seal the Kansas victory.

“I thought both teams played their heart out but we came out one possession short.” Anderson said.

Anderson’s implementation of his aggressive full court press style defense at Missouri has already made an impact. The Tiger’s brand of basketball has earned them nicknames of everything from “40 minutes of hell” to “The Hottest Show in the Midwest”.

Going into the game against the Jayhawks, the team was ranked number two nationally with 12.2 steals per game. Kansas was able to adapt to the frenetic defense and actually led Missouri 5-1 in steals at halftime.

The Tigers were also able to adjust to the Jayhawks strength of running up and down the court and outscored them 16-12 on fast break points.

Missouri now stands at 0-4 in conference play and will have to wait nine days to travel to Colorado and get another chance at coming out with a win.

“We’ve got to have a sense of urgency,” Lawrence said, “losing four in a row in the Big 12 is hard to come back from.”
