Rain and a stolen camera didn’t hamper Joe Carey from participating in the One Night Stand Film Festival in Kansas City, Mo, on July 7. Carey, Lenexa senior and film student won third place out of 16 contestants in the competition.
Participants had 10 hours to shoot and edit their film. Judges assigned by the Independent Filmmakers Coalition chose the first place winner while the audience chose second and third place.
The first place winner of the competition was Nairba Sirrah with an untitled film. Second place went to Buzz Visconti and J.J. Brudt with a film named “Voices.”
David Winger, IFC Vice President, said that rain affected the number of contestants who entered the festival. Last year, he said, they had 34 entries.
Carey said the rain slowed down the shooting.
“Many people had to shoot indoors because of the rain,” Carey said. “Because we had some outside shots, I had to have someone hold an umbrella next to the camera to film anything.”
Participants had to use an assigned theme, line from a movie and a prop in order for their film to qualify.
Only 12 finished within the allotted time but the IFC showed every film, even if it did not qualify for the film festival.
“We realize that the team members worked very hard on their projects throughout the rainy day,” Winger said. “The IFC board firmly believes that all of the films deserve an opportunity to be screened in front of an audience on the big screen.”
Franco Leng, Overland Park senior, was one of the participants who did not turn his material in on time.
“As long as you keep on entering you only improve you don’t make worse and worse movies because its all about the way you tell it which improves with experience” Leng said.
Carey is working on his next project a sequel to “The adventures of Teddy and Walls,” a film for which he won the Wild West Film Festival last month.
