Mangino enthusiastic about upcoming season

If enthusiasm wins football games, head coach Mark Mangino expects the Jayhawks to have a lot of success during the 2007 football season.

On Wednesday, Mangino talked to 100 Williams Fund members about the upcoming football season during a speech in Wichita. The Williams Fund is made up of private donors to create athletic scholarships.

He said the football team has been working hard in the off season to improve from their 6-6 record a year ago. He said that the team is a close-knit group and having a strong bond transfers over to positive results on the football field.

“Our kids are full of enthusiasm,” Mangino said. “That excitement translates into better preparation for the season.”

He said he appreciates the support the community of Wichita provides for the football program. He said it is important for the people of Wichita to be excited about KU football.

“The supporters do so much for our University,” Mangino said. “Sometimes we only get one shot to be down here each year so it is important to speak with everyone.”

As the new football facilities begin to form, Mangino said the facilities will provide new opportunities for current players as well as future recruits.

Mangino said the team does keep a low profile during the off-season. While the coaches are on the recruiting trail, the players continue to work out and prepare for their first game against defending MAC Champion Central Michigan.

“We might not be in the public eye as often, but I guarantee we are working hard” Mangino said. “Central Michigan is a very talented program.”

Mangino will continue to visit Williams Fund members in different cities throughout the summer to speak about the future of the program. He said it is important to touch base with supporters throughout the state.
