About 200 students and members of the community gathered with lawn chairs and blankets on June 7 to attend the first Downtown Lawrence Film Noir Festival.
The festival, which is set in the lawn next to the parking garage on 9th St. and New Hemisphere, began at 8 p.m. with live jazz music and a prize give-away.
The film “In a Lonely Place,” starring Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame, is the story of a screenwriter who is suspected of murder.
Rick Marquez, executive director of Downtown Lawrence, Inc., said that the Film Noir was chosen to present to the Lawrence community for their attraction to the general public.
“They are wonderful films, have recognizable stars and directors, and are appropriate to screen in a public setting,” Marquez said.
Attendants enjoyed the film but were surprised by how many people showed up.
“It is pretty amazing to see how many people came here today even though there are so many other things going on, like the Wakarusa festival,” Amanda Diercks. Agra junior, said.
The film was the first of a series of others that will be shown the first Thursday of every month until September.
