Joe Carey has been participating in film festivals since his sophomore year in high school.
Carey, Lenexa senior, said it started when he entered a Public Service Announcement he filmed for a class in the Shawnee Mission film festival.
Five years later, Carey won first place at the Wild West film festival on June 10 for his film “The Adventures of Teddy and Walls”.
This Saturday, Carey will participate in the 7th Annual One Night Stand film festival in Kansas City, Mo.. The festival is sponsored by The Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City.
Participants sign up for the festival at 9 a.m. at Westport Coffee House, 4010 Pennsylvania in Kansas City, MO., then have 10 hours to shoot and edit their films.
The films must be turned in by 7 p.m. at the Just Off Broadway Theatre, 3051 Central in Penn Valley Park.
David Winger, vice president of the Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City, said the coalition took steps to prevent participants from filming before hand. For example, IFC members draw a general subject theme, a prop to appear in the film and a line of dialogue from a well-known film from a hat the day of the event.
Carey said that the process of making the movie for a timed film festival starts even before he signs up.
“I come up with a loose idea, like something I think is funny or silly that it’s a simple enough thing that I think I can film in 48 hours,” Carey said “then when I sign up I get the criteria and then start working it into my idea and write the script.”
The films are judged on how well the film adhere to the theme and how clever the prop and line of dialogue are incorporated into the final film
The films will be shown at the Just Off Broadway Theater at 9 p.m. on Saturday for a general audience. Tickets will cost $8.00 for non-IFC members.
Carey said he will start shooting a second part to “The Adventures of Teddy and Walls”, next month and possibly will begin submitting his films in nation-wide film festivals.
As far as the film festival on Saturday, Carey said he just hopes for the best.
“I’m really hoping that I make a quality movie that people enjoy,” Carey said.
