Baseball falls at Texas A&M

Jayhawks win once, lose twice in College Station

SUNDAY—Texas A&M 10, Kansas 9

Slugging it out to the bitter end, the clichéd happened. With one out and one out in the bottom of the ninth, junior first baseman Darby Brown drove in the winning run to end the game in Texas A&M’s (20-3, 2-1) favor.

Kansas (13-11, 1-2) held a solid 9-6 lead through the top of the seventh. The bottom of the seventh didn’t go so well as a two-run triple and a run scoring error consumed the lead that the Jayhawks would never get back.

Even the back-to-back four-run innings in the top of the third and fourth that resulted in an 8-2 Kansas lead wasn’t enough for the Jayhawks, especially after Parker Dalton’s grand slam in A&M’s half of the fourth.

Freshman third baseman Robby Price hit extended his hit streak to 16 games. The youngest Price went 2-for-5 with three RBI to lead his team’s offense. Along with senior centerfielder Kyle Murphy, who went 2-for-5 and scored three times.

Sophomore lefty Andy Marks allowed six runs in 6 1/3 innings of work, the most of any starter this weekend. The loss, however, went to junior right-hander Andres Esquibel (3-1) who gave up four runs in just 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Senior right-hander Kyle Nicholson (6-1) picked up his second victory in relief for the weekend after tossing the game’s final five innings and allowing just one run.

Kansas will take on Northern Colorado on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

SATURDAY—Kansas 17, Texas A&M 13 (F/11)

In a complete turn of events from the conference opener on Friday night, Kansas found a way to knock off No. 16 Texas A&M in the top of the 11th inning on Saturday night.

The weak offensive performance the Jayhawks put up on Friday was a thing of the past as Kansas put up 20 hits on the game, marking only the third time the Ritch Price era that the Jayhawks collected 20 hits in a Big 12 contest.

The surplus of Kansas hits led to the surplus of runs, compacted mostly into big innings such as a six-run fourth and a four-run 11th. Unfortunately for the Jayhawks, it was the eight-run Aggie fifth that created the need for 11 innings.

Junior right fielder Brock Simpson highlighted the Jayhawks first big inning when he belted a three-run homer in the top of the fourth. The round tripper was Simpson’s first of the season, and a big step in Kansas’ building of a 10-2 lead.

Texas A&M then retorted with an eight-run fifth inning to tie the score at 10. Together the teams scored 18 runs from the fourth to sixth innings.

The back-and-forth bickering continued in the seventh and eighth as the ‘Hawks would score and the Aggies would answer.

Until the 11th. Sophomore Justin Ellrich knocked in a pair of runs as a pinch hitter and junior shortstop Erik Morrison also drove one in as the Jayhawks pulled away in the 17-13 victory.

Senior outfielder Kyle Murphy went 3-for-7 with three RBI in the victory. Sophomore closer Paul Smyth threw the most innings of any of the five Jayhawk pitchers used, allowing just one run in his 4 2/3 innings of relief.

FRIDAY—Texas A&M 9, Kansas 3

Kansas opened Big 12 play on a negative note, losing to No. 16 Texas A&M, 9-3 on Friday night.

Keeping it close, the Jayhawks trailed the Aggies early after the home team put a pair of runs up in the bottom of the first. Kansas answered immediately with two runs of its own in the top of the second.

The Jayhawks managed to hang with the red-hot Aggies until the seventh inning. With only a slight 5-3 advantage, Texas A&M busted open the gap with a four-run seventh that sealed the deal.

Senior centerfielder Kyle Murphy led the offense, collecting two of Kansas’ five total hits. Freshman third baseman Robby Price extended his hit streak to 14 games on a 1-for-3 performance.

Sophomore lefty Nick Czyz (2-3) took the loss after six innings on the mound. Czyz surrendered five runs on nine hits, but struck out eight. A&M’s big inning was charged to junior right-handed reliever Andres Esquibel, who pitched only the seventh.

Senior right-hander Kyle Nicholson grabbed the victory after throwing five scoreless innings in relief.
