Game one: Oklahoma State 14, Kansas 4
Winning pitcher – Robbie Weinhardt (1-0); Losing pitcher – Nick Czyz (2-4)
The most powerful offense in the Big 12 Conference flexed its muscles Friday, scoring 11 runs in the last four innings. The Cowboys’ bullpen was lights out, allowing only two hits, no walks and no runs over that span.
Top 1st – Czyz got off to a rough start, coughing up a leadoff single to Keanon Simon and a four-pitch walk to Ty Wright before recording an out. He compounded his troubles with a balk and another walk to load the bases. Yet he almost escaped the jam until a single by Rebel Ridling drove in Simon and Wright.
Bottom 1st – Kyle Murphy helped Kansas retaliate with a leadoff hit of his own. After stealing third base, he came in to score on a Brock Simpson single.
Top 2nd – Matt Lopez earned a one-out walk and came around to score on a Corey Brown single.
Bottom 5th – Kansas gave Oklahoma State a taste of its own medicine with a leadoff hit by Justin Ellrich followed with a walk by Ross Kelling. Robby Price brought everybody home to give Kansas the lead with a three-run home run to right field.
Top 6th – An error by Kelling at first base proved costly as it allowed the Cowboys to regain the lead. After his error Ryan Flavell scored on a fielder’s choice and Simon scored on a wild pitch by Kansas reliever Andres Esquibel. Matt Mangini capped off the rally with a three-run home run. All five of Oklahoma State’s runs were unearned.
Top 7th – Kelling bobbled a ball to his right with two outs, allowing Simon to beat out the play at first and Jordy Mercer to score from third as Oklahoma State added to its lead.
Top 8th – The one-sided scoring continued as Oklahoma State tacked on three more runs. Brown was the first Cowboy to cross the plate, on a fielder’s choice. The second and third runs of the inning came in on a two-run home run by Ridling.
Top 9th – For good measure, the Cowboys added two more runs in the final stanza. Brown sent a delivery from Matt Lane over the right field fence for a home run, plating Wright as well.
Notes:
– Price’s home run in the fifth was his first career round-tripper as a Jayhawk.
– Not only did Oklahoma State score 10 more runs than Kansas, it also collected 10 more hits, 17-7.
– Weinhardt pitched 4.2 innings of relief, allowing no runs and only two hits while striking out two.
– Czyz lasted 5.1 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and five walks while striking out four.
