Kansas 6, Oklahoma State 3
W – Zach Ashwood (3-2); L – Justin Friend (2-2); Save – Paul Smyth (5)
For the second straight weekend, Kansas took the second game of a three-game series, putting it in position to take the series. On the Jayhawks’ way to victory Ashwood and Smyth held Oklahoma State to its smallest offensive output since March 10. Although 14 Jayhawks were left on base, the six who crossed the plate proved plenty.
Top 2nd – The Cowboys struck first for the second straight game. Matt Mangini led off the inning with a single. Two batters later Jordy Mercer singled to center field. Mangini came in to score on a Dylan Brown single. Mercer also scored on the play as center fielder Kyle Murphy’s throw to third base sailed into the Kansas dugout.
Bottom 3rd – Kansas broke up Friend’s perfect game, no-hitter and shutout and knotted the game, 2-2. Buck Afenir reached base on an error to lead off the inning and Justin Ellrich followed with a double. After back-to-back infield pop-ups Robby Price was hit by a pitch to load the bases. John Allman then brought Afenir and Ellrich home with a two-out single to right field.
Bottom 4th – The Jayhawks pulled ahead in their next at-bat thanks to doubles by Ryne Price and Ellrich. Price’s came first and he scored on Ellrich’s. The favor was returned as Ellrich came in to score on a single by Preston Land. The RBI was Land’s first since March 14, seven games ago.
Top 5th – The Cowboys inched closer in an odd way. With Keanon Simon on third and Ty Wright at the plate, Afenir dropped a third strike. Simon took off for home on Afenir’s throw to first and scored. Wright was then called safe at first although it didn’t appear that Land’s foot pulled off the bag. Luckily for the Jayhawks, no further damage was done in the inning.
Bottom 6th – Kansas loaded the bases again and cashed in to extend its lead, 6-3. Land scored from third on a sac fly by Allman. Brock Simpson then grounded to second base with two outs, but second baseman Tyler Mach booted it, allowing Murphy to score from second.
Notes
— Ashwood went six innings, matching his season high, and allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out four.
— Smyth relieved Ashwood after the sixth and finished the game, allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out three.
— Allman went 2-for-3 and led Kansas with three RBI. Ellrich was the only other Jayhawk to collect multiple hits, also going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. He led the team with two runs scored.
