COLUMBIA, Mo. — Sophomore Preston Land’s double slammed into the left field bullpen just inches from clearing the fence in the top of the ninth. The first baseman’s knock scored two, but Kansas still came up shy of the comeback victory, losing to Missouri 8-7.
Looking not at all like the Jayhawks who’ve struggled offensively as of late, fellow sophomore Buck Afenir (4,5) belted two homeruns in back-to-back at bats. Although Kansas kept closer pace with Missouri in game two, each had 12 hits and struck out just five times, Missouri held on.
Top 2nd — The Jayhawks executed where the Tigers failed to when they loaded the bases in the bottom of the first. Junior shortstop Erik Morrison’s single to left gave him a good look at Buck Afenir’s homerun that soon followed. The two-run shot put the Jayhawks on the scoreboard first for the second consecutive game.
Bottom 2nd — Setting the tone for the day’s slugfest the Tigers responded immediately. A leadoff error later scored on centerfielder Evan Frey’s infield single. A sacrifice fly scored the Tigers’ second run to tie the game.
Bottom 3rd — Third baseman Kyle Mach took one for the team all the way to the plate. Mach was one of three batters Kansas beaned, but the Tigers took the lead, 3-2, when he scored.
Top 4th — Wind teamed up with power for the ‘Hawks in the fourth. Afenir homered in his second consecutive at bat. Junior designated hitter Joe Servais evidently liked the idea, and went yard two batters later. The solo to right was his first as a Jayhawk.
Bottom 5th — The three-run home run haunting the Jayhawk pitchers found its way to Columbia. After allowing a walk and a base hit, Ashwood gave up the three-run
bomb — and the lead — to Frey. Ashwood would not survive the inning. Junior right-hander Andres Esquibel came in an out later.
Top 6th — In turn, the Jayhawks tormented Frey in their next at bat. Junior second baseman Ryne Price dropped a single right in front of the centerfielder, and scored when senior centerfielder Kyle Murphy did the same.
Bottom 6th — The second Kansas outfield error of the afternoon put runners on second and third with nobody out. Both would score, increasing the Tiger lead to 8-5.
\Top 9th — The older Price started the two-out rally doubling down the right field line. Afenir walked to make room for Land’s double. Hicks pitched to just one batter to record the save.
-GAME NOTES-
— Afenir’s solo shot in the top of the fourth was the first back-to-back at bat homers since Morrison did the deed against Oklahoma State last season.
— The five home runs thus far in the series are the most for Kansas since hitting eight in three-games versus Oklahoma State last season.
