Late last week, Brandon Rush decided to return to Kansas for his junior season. Now we know why.
Coach Bill Self confirmed Tuesday that Rush torn the ACL in his right knee playing a pick up game last week. When the announcement was made that Rush would return to school, Self and Rush had said an injury, which wasn't disclosed at the time, was not the main reason he decided to return.
"We did not announce the nature of the injury last week per Brandon's request," Self said. "Friday was an emotional day for Brandon as he had worked very hard in preparation for the NBA pre-draft camp. By law we cannot comment on an injury without a player's consent."
Self said Rush would have surgery on his knee next week
In April, Rush entered his name into the draft, but did not hire an agent, leaving open the possibility he could return to school.
"Brandon has handled the process exactly the way the system was designed and has followed through with everything he said he would do," Self said in a statement. "I know in his mind he wanted to do this from a personal standpoint to investigate, but he never lost sight of the fact that he was going to make a smart decision that was based on his well-being for a career and not just the immediate future."
Rush has led the Jayhawks in scoring both of his seasons at Kansas. He is also a two-time All-Big 12 honoree and was also named to a Naismith Award finalist last season.
With Rush returning, Kansas returns 13 of 14 players. Only Julian Wright, who also delcared for the draft, will not return. Last season, Kansas finished 33-5, winning both the Big 12 regular season and tournament titles, and also advanced to the Elite Eight.
"It has never been my goal that Brandon return," Self said. "It has always been my goal that Brandon make the best decision for his future. I am excited for our fans and this upcoming season. I believe that Brandon will prepare harder than ever to put himself into a position that he will be a very high NBA draft pick after his junior season. My immediate concern is that Brandon has the knee evaluated and begins any rehabilitation that is required."

Rush has torn ACL
A tough setback for Rush. Most NBA teams were moving him up their draft board, but without being able to compete in Orlando his chances of getting picked in the first round are almost nonexistent.
