Kansas easily disposed of Washburn in a 92-60 victory. But the score served as a secondary story line because junior guard Brandon Rush returned to the floor.
Rush, playing for the first time since a knee injury, received 12 minutes of playing time in the first half and scored seven points. He didn’t play in the second half as the Jayhawks cruised by the Ichabods.
Kansas fed Darrel Arthur early in the second half and he scored six points in six minutes. Arthur scored a team-high 14 points. Senior guard Rodrick Stewart finished off Washburn. Late in the second half, Stewart broke loose on a fast break and threw down a monstrous dunk. He followed it with a perfect block on the other side of the court less than two minutes later. Stewart, who scored nine points in the victory, exited the court to a standing ovation from the student section and chants of his name.
FIRST HALF
Brandon Rush checked into the game with 16:17 remaining in the first half and the Kansas crowd greeted him with a deafening cheer.
The Jayhawk faithful didn’t have much else to be proud of. Kansas played a sloppy first half but leads Washburn 34-18 at halftime.
Rush looked understandably rusty on the defensive end as he tried to adjust to game-speed for the first time in eight months. But have no fear: Rush’s offensive production was as lethal as ever.
Rush scored seven first half points, including a three-pointer from the left corner. Senior forward Darnell Jackson and junior guard Mario Chalmers were the only Jayhawks to score more than Rush in the first half. Jackson had 10 points while Chalmers added eight.
Nine of the Ichabod’s 18 points came from three-pointers as they have found it tough to compete in the frontcourt with the bigger and stronger Jayhawks.
