Players of the week
Coach Mark Mangino announced the Kansas players of the week on Tuesday. Junior linebacker Joe Mortensen and senior defensive tackle James McClinton split the defensive honors. Mortensen is currently leading the Big 12 Conference in tackles for loss. Junior tackle Anthony Collins earned offensive player of the week and junior wide receiver Marcus Herford took the special teams honors after gaining 149 yards on three kick returns. The scout team players of the week were freshman wide receiver Xavier Rambo and sophomore linebacker Jake Schermer.
Injury update
Junior cornerback Kendrick Harper is still on track to return from an injury in time for the Oct. 6 trip to Kansas State. Mangino said Harper was anxious to return to the field after sitting out since the first week of preseason camp. The Butler County Community College transfer has been participating in light workouts lately.
Junior defensive tackle Todd Haselhorst is nearing full strength after suffering an offseason injury that set him back in preseason practices. The Olathe native said he is currently playing at 95 percent and has felt fine in limited game action this season. He has not started either of Kansas’ games this season but has played a few snaps in each. Last week Haselhorst collected only one tackle, but it resulted in an eight-yard loss.
No-cupcake approach
Mangino downplayed the possibility that Kansas players could be taking the team’s weak non-conference schedule lightly. He said the Jayhawks prepare for every game in the same way, no matter the opponent and that he expects the players to ramp up their intensity as the season progresses.
