Pink Floyd’s last studio album was released in 1994, but it’s not stopping people from celebrating the band and its music. Tonight the Lied Center hosts “The Pink Floyd Experience” as a tribute to the rock band.
Karen Chrisilles, associate director for the center, said the center looks for a lot of Broadway-type shows and that “The Pink Floyd Experience” was something it thought would be entertaining for a lot of people.
“An homage to the band would be a good way of putting it,” Chrisilles said. “We took a look at the show and found it really appealing.”
Brad Knauss, associate director of marketing for the center, said the show would have a lot to offer those who attended.
Knauss said the event would feature a concert by a six-piece band who will perform some of Pink Floyd’s most popular songs, such as “Another Brick in the Wall” and “Time.” Knauss said there would also be other parts of the show people should look forward to.
“The icons that Pink Floyd made on their own — from the blinking eye to the marching hammers, and the 12-foot pig blimp that flies over the audience — have all been re-created for this concert experience,” Knauss said. “Students will be able to hear the cash registers featured in ‘Money’ and the clocks from ‘Time’ ‘run around’ the auditorium in quadraphonic sound.” The show will also recreate the band’s famous airplane crash.
Richard Davis, St. Louis senior and Pink Floyd fan, wants to attend the show, but is unsure if it will be worth it.
“I like Pink Floyd, and I think the show is a cool idea, but I would like to have seen the actual band there. That would really make me want to attend,” Davis said.
Knauss said the show was well worth viewer’s time. Because the show used innovative technology, the center was convinced it would be popular with the Lawrence area, she said.
“With the multimedia nature of the original band’s concerts, (the show) was ahead of its time,” Knauss said. “It is the combination of great music and the use of multimedia that help bridge the generation gap.”
“The Pink Floyd Experience” will rock-on at 7:30 tonight at the Lied Center. Tickets are still available at the Lied Center and cost $40 for adults and $20 for students and children.
