Students can shake for a good cause on Saturday at the Student Recreation Fitness Center.
A ‘zumbathon” fundraiser, hosted by the Center for Community Outreach takes place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the recreation center.
The Center for Community Outreach will use proceeds from the class to fund programs including the Jubilee Café, which recently revealed it was low on funds. The cost is $10 for students and $15 for others.
Melissa White, Sussex, Wisc., senior and financial director at the Center for Community Outreach, will be instructing the zumba class. She said zumba was an aerobic workout based on Latin dance moves.
White also teaches the class at the Lawrence Athletic Club.
She said that in a zumba class there was no counting down or yelling, like a typical aerobics class. Instead, participants simply follow the moves of the instructor.
“It’s supposed to feel like a dance party,” White said. “You need to be uninhibited.”
White said the class provided a good abdominal workout.
“It’s very intense cardio, and you can also add more toning,” White said.
Kelli Stout and Dan Pierron, co-directors of the center, said that they chose the zumba class as a fundraiser because it was unique.
“Melissa came up with the idea, and we thought it was great,” Stout said.
White said she enjoyed seeing younger and older generations in her class.
“I feel like it bridges a huge generation gap,” White said.
In addition to the zumba fundraiser, the center will be collecting donations for the United Way in a change drive before and during halftime of tomorrow’s football game against Florida International.
