Junior pitcher Nick Czyz throws a pitch Friday afternoon against Texas Tech. Czyz struck seven Red Raiders out giving up just three hits in a 9-5 victory at Hoglund Ballpark.
Friday’s game between Kansas and Texas Tech was brought to you by the No. 3.
Three Jayhawks homered and junior left-hander Nick Czyz allowed just three earned runs on only three hits and three walks while three relievers helped secure the lead for Kansas’ first home Big 12 victory. With its 9-5 victory Friday, Kansas broke a six-game conference losing streak.
“It was obviously huge,” Czyz said. “All I wanted to do was come out here on a Friday and try to set the tone for the rest of our pitchers.”
Despite frigid conditions, the Jayhawks were undeterred on both sides of the ball.
Senior left fielder John Allman, senior shortstop Erik Morrison and junior first baseman Preston Land each hit home runs to power the Kansas offense. Those three round tippers accounted for three of the Jayhawks’ 12 hits. Allman tied sophomore second baseman Robby Price for the team lead in hits in the series opener, with three, and tied Land with a game high three RBI.
On the mound, Czyz (2-3) put forth his longest outing in more than a year, striking out seven and allowing four runs in 6.1 innings. His victory was the first for a Kansas starter in a weekend series since junior left-hander Sam Freeman earned one against Texas on March 16.
Sophomore right-hander Brett Bollman, sophomore left-hander Shaeffer Hall and junior right-hander Paul Smyth combined to pitch the final 2.2 innings and allowed the Red Raiders to gain only one run on the Jayhawks’ lead.
Texas Tech’s bullpen allowed four runs in 5.2 innings, but its starter let the game get out of hand early. The Jayhawks jumped out to an early lead on right-hander Nathan Karns (1-6), scoring five runs in the first three innings.
“When you’ve lost six conference games in a row, we needed to find a way to get it done,” Kansas coach Ritch Price said. “I think it started with the starting pitching.”
