Coming into the season, sophomore left-hander Wally Marciel figured to be a key member of Kansas’ weekend rotation.
However, Marciel is no longer part of Kansas’ plans for 2008 after coach Ritch Price announced Tuesday that he has shut down Marciel for the rest of the season. Marciel tore a ligament in his throwing elbow over a week ago that will require Tommy John surgery.
"I'm confident that the surgery will be a complete success and that Wally will make a 100 percent recovery," Price said in a Kansas athletics news release. "He's going to receive the best medical care in the country."
As a freshman, Marciel led Kansas with a 3.94 ERA and was named All-Freshman Second Team by Ping! Baseball. That momentum didn’t carry into this season, though, as he never quite got on track. After allowing six earned runs in a third of an inning against Texas A&M on March 28, his ERA climbed to 8.33 and Price moved him to the midweek so he could regain his confidence.
Marciel (3-4) pitched well in three innings against Saint Mary on April 2, but against Baylor two days later, he experienced discomfort in his left elbow and was taken out of the game after facing just three batters.
Marciel’s recovery from Tommy John surgery is expected to take 12-15 months, all but eliminating the chances of him pitching in 2009.
