A day after reserve running back Carmon Boyd-Anderson informed multiple news outlets of his intention to transfer, fellow reserve back Donte Bean confirmed to the University Daily Kansan that he is leaving the Kansas football program as well.
Bean, a redshirt sophomore from North Garland High School in Rowlett, Texas who was the 15th rated all-purpose running back coming out of high school in 2006 by Rivals.com, informed coach Mark Mangino of his decision last week.
“Just seeing the depth chart and seeing everybody else playing and stuff and just not getting as many reps as I want to get, I thought it would be better to try and find somewhere else where I will be needed more,” Bean said Monday morning in a phone conversation with the Kansan.
Bean hopes to transfer to Washburn University so he can play immediately and not be forced to sit out a year but is waiting for Kansas to release him from his scholarship, something he was told will happen at the end of two-a-day practices early next week.
Bean’s brother, Brandon Walker, is a running back at Washburn and Bean said being able to stay close to friends in Lawrence was also a factor. He can’t contact the coaches at Washburn until he is released from Kansas, but said he figured to be able to catch on at Washburn as soon as that took place.
Bean, who had seven rushes for 20 yards last season, red-shirted in 2006 and fell behind Brandon McAnderson and Jake Sharp on the depth chart last year. With Sharp and junior-college transfer Jocques Crawford sure to take the majority of the reps for the next two seasons, Bean said he realized he would have trouble cracking the rotation anytime soon.
“I don’t have any hard feelings towards anyone,” Bean said. “That’s just how things work out. I love Kansas and I wish I was still playing for them. It’s not like I have anything against them for not playing or anything.”
Boyd-Anderson was rated the 33rd best running back in the nation by rivals.com coming out of high school in 2007 but was talked about as a possible redshirt candidate this year due to the Jayhawks depth at running back. He had 24 rushes for 91 yards and a touchdown in a reserve role as a true freshman last year.
And if those two departures weren’t enough, the Lawrence Journal World reported on Saturday that Sean Ransburg, a 6-foot-1, 195- pound running back from Harrisonville (Mo.) High School was not cleared to play by the NCAA Clearinghouse and will not be on campus for the 2008 season.
Ransburg threw for 2,556 yards and 29 touchdowns and had another 1,677 yards and 29 touchdowns on the ground during his senior year in 2007.
The three departures leaves the Jayhawks with just four running backs for the 2008 season in Sharp, Crawford, junior Angus Quigley and sophomore Rell Lewis, who made the switch from wide receiver to running back during the off-season.
