While the Obama campaign didn't alert supporters to his VP choice until Saturday morning (via text message and e-mail), the Associated Press confirmed by midnight that Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware would be the vice presidential candidate.
Biden has more than 30 years of experience in the Senate. He currently chairs the Foreign Relations Committee, and also sits on the Judiciary Committee and is involved with the Drug Caucus. He was an early contender in the 2008 presidential race, dropping out after the Iowa Caucus in January. Biden spoke at KU's Dole Institute of Politics on Oct. 28, 2005 as part of the Institute's 2008 "Contenders" Lecture Series.
Other top contenders for the vice presidential spot reportedly were: Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia (a Kansas native), Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana, Rep. Chet Edwards of Texas and Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.
Obama (presumably with Biden) will speak in Springfield, Ill., Saturday afternoon. Obama first announced his candidacy in Springfield last year.
The Democratic National Convention begins Monday in Denver. Featured speakers include former governor and current Senate candidate Mark Warner of Virginia (the keynote speaker), Sen. Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Obama and Biden themselves. Biden is slated to speak Wednesday night in the VP prime time slot. Obama will deliver his nomination acceptance speech Thursday night at INVESCO Field at Mile High.
The Republican National Convention begins in St. Paul on Sept. 1. Sen. John McCain has yet to pick a running mate, but rumored choices include former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist.
The Kansan will be covering both conventions, with featured print and Kansan.com content.
