Only two media members remained when Jocques Crawford slowely walked into Mrkonic Auditorium late Saturday night to speak about his first game as a Kansas Jayhawk.
The 6-1, 230 pound junior college transfer found a seat in the front row, slouched down in his chair, and stared at the ground - visibly dejected following the Jayhawks 40-10 victory over FIU.
Crawford wasn’t just depressed because he rushed for only 32 yards on 11 carries, but more because he injured his ankle late in the first quarter and was forced to get x-rays after the game.
“I’m just kind of upset about the fact of getting injured,” Crawford said quietly. “I'm happy about the win, though. I didn’t do as good as I thought I was going to do. It hurt a lot that I couldn’t get out there and do more, but you know, it happens to everyone, and when you go down, you just have to get out there and support your teammates.”
Crawford, who had six carries for 28 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter, injured his ankle late in the first quarter one play after wide receiver Dexton Fields left with an injury of his own. Fields did not return, but Crawford did and had five more carries for only 4 yards before re-aggravating the ankle injury that ended his night in the third quarter.
“I went back in and pushed it but I tweaked it again,” Crawford said. “A guy tackled me and actually twisted my ankle when he tackled me so he tweaked it a little more than what it was. They said it wasn't that bad at all. I'll be alright."
Despite having to leave the game early, Crawford indicated that he hoped he wouldn't have to miss any practice time.
"He got dinged up a little bit," said coach Mark Mangino. "It's nothing serious. We didn't want to take any chance towards the end of the game."
