A sprinkler-system pipe burst on the sixth floor of Hashinger Hall early Sunday morning, causing “minimal” water damage to approximately 15 rooms, a representative of the University said.
Jill Jess, associate director of University Relations, said Department of Student Housing employees heard an alarm caused by the break and immediately began to remove water from the affected rooms on the fourth, fifth and sixth floors.
Diana Robertson, director of the Department, said Sunday’s extreme low temperatures and an air vent that was left open caused the pipe to freeze and burst.
The Department contacted all the students affected Sunday. Department employees removed the water and dried and laundered the affected property, Robertson said.
Jess said all damage was contained to carpets and items left on the floor and that nothing was destroyed.
“They’re not going to walk into soggy rooms when they get back,” Jess said of the students whose rooms were affected. “But students are encouraged to have renters’ insurance for situations like this."
