Kansas lost consecutive games for the first time this season and remains winless in Big 12 Conference play after falling to Nebraska 71-51 in Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday. The loss is the Jayhawk’s fifth straight against the Cornhuskers and drops them to 0-2 in conference action.
Kansas jumped out to a 6-2 advantage early in the first half but couldn’t find any offensive consistency against Nebraska’s vaunted defensive pressure. Coach Bonnie Henrickson’s team was overwhelmed by a 22-7 Nebraska run to end the first half that effectively put the game out of reach.
Nebraska pounded the ball inside and forced Kansas into costly foul trouble. Freshman forward Nicolette Smith fouled out with nine points and five rebounds while senior guard Ivana Catic and senior forward Taylor McIntosh each accumulated four fouls. Freshman center Krysten Boogaard was limited to only 20 minutes after picking up three fouls.
The Huskers took full advantage of their trips to the free-throw line, making 30-of-32 attempts.
Sophomore guard Danielle McCray was also in foul trouble early for the second straight game but still led Kansas with 14 points on 5-for-13 shooting. The Jayhawks committed 24 turnovers to only six assists.
Nebraska capitalized on those mistakes to claim a 28-12 advantage in points on turnovers. Junior forward Kelsey Griffin led all scorers with 15 points and was 9-11 from the line.
Despite pulling down 19 offensive rebounds to Nebraska’s six, Kansas was never closer than 12 points after halftime.
