Kellam Jones, the 16-year-old charged in the murders that resulted from an aggravated robbery on June 7, was moved to the adult criminal docket today. The move was a result of ongoing motions from the state to have Jones tried as an adult.
In the morning hours of June 7, Jones and friend Gage Hauk, reportedly entered the residence of Roland Klundt, 1311 Delaware. After entering the home, Klundt allegedly fired a fatal shot at Hauk, then Jones allegedly killed Klundt.
Originally Jones was charged with the murders of both Hauk and Klundt. However, today the state and the defense motioned that count two, felony murder of Gage Hauk, would be dismissed. Jones will still face charges of felony murder of Ronald Klundt and aggravated robbery.
Jones’ defense attorney, Craig Stancliffe, motioned for additional time in the preliminary hearing. Stancliffe is in the process of collecting witnesses. With further discovery in the case, Stancliffe said that he could illustrate the circumstance was not aggravated murder.
“I need to paint the picture of what happened,” Stancliffe said.
Judge Michael Malone has set the authorization hearing, concerning Jones’ status as a minor, for July 24. A preliminary trial will follow on August 8.
Jones will remain in juvenile custody unless the court decides that he be tried as an adult.
