Korean Culture Show gives students an opportunity to learn while being entertained

Next weekend’s Korean Culture Show will offer a two-hour exploration of traditional Korean music, martial art and dances, which are rich in colors and symbolism.

The show will take place in the Kansas Union on July 19. Jeong Woong Cheon, organizer of the event, said it had been more than 10 years since the last Korean cultural show was held at the University. He said it would be a good opportunity for students to enjoy traditional Korean culture.

“In Korea, we have thousands of years of history,” Cheon said. “It’s richness of our culture.”

The show is part of a world conference at the University: “Positive Youth Development and Welfare through Strengths and Spirituality: Views from Korea and America.”

Cheon, researcher at the school of social welfare, organized the event to promote an understanding of Korea in the conference. Although the conference will focus on social welfare, he said the culture show would be open to the public and accessible to all.

Cheon invited performers from Topeka, Kansas City and Bloomington, Ind. Some of them are professional.

The show will feature a drum percussion ensemble, dance, demonstration of tae kwon do and a recital of a traditional string instrument. Performers will dress in colorful traditional clothes.

Edward Canda, professor of social welfare, will perform meditative percussion, which he started as an extension of his study in Korea.

Canda, who studies cross-cultural social work and spirituality, will play agricultural music. He said the theme of his performance was honoring and appreciating all things in all directions.

“The drum dance goes through circles and spirals and moves in four directions and connects in the center,” Canda said. “The symbolism represents harmony and connection among everything in the universe.”

Each performance has a background and meaning. But Canda said the audience could still enjoy the show without knowing many details.

“If people just open their mind to experience it without cultural expectations, then they will find some new artistic awareness,” Canda said. “For example, traditional Korean percussion rhythms are much different from Western rhythms, whether it’s in classical music or rock music.”

Rachel Cheon, Lawrence freshman, helped organize the culture show. Cheon, who moved from Korea to the U.S. seven years ago, will give a brief presentation about modern Korea. She said she hoped the show would raise awareness of Korea.

She said although she was Korean, she also expects to learn from the diversity of the show.

“Korean people in my generation are into Western culture. I didn’t know much about traditional music or dance,” Cheon said. “I realized a lot of good traditional culture.”
