Mangino’s contract extended by two years

The Kansas Athletics Department rewarded football coach Mark Mangino for guiding the Jayhawks to a school-best 12-1 record last season with an $800,000 raise and two-year contract extension.

Mangino, the 2007 national coach of the year, will make $2.3 million per year through 2012 — his original contract expired in 2010. Athletics Director Lew Perkins announced the extension and raise yesterday.

“This is an appropriate reward for someone who has done a terrific job with the Kansas football program,” Perkins said in a statement.

Mangino’s amended contract is laced with incentives. If he stays through the 2012 season, Mangino will earn an additional $1.5 million.

He could receive bonuses of up to $675,000 per year by meeting annual incentives.

“We all share the same vision of excellence in our football program,” Mangino said in the statement. “I appreciate their support of our mission to keep KU football a nationally ranked and respected program, both on the field and in the classroom.”

The contract just goes along with heightened expectations for the Jayhawks’ next football season. The Orange Bowl was the team’s first-ever BCS bowl championship.

In his six years, Mangino has guided the Jayhawks to three bowl games, which is the most of any Kansas coach. Mangino has led Kansas to victory in 15 of its last 17 games.

“We think the Orange Bowl championship is just the beginning,” Perkins said.
