Kellam D. Jones, 16, Lawrence, had his first court appearance Tuesday involving the murders of Gage Hauk, 18, of McLouth, and Ronald Victor Klundt, 20, of Lawrence.
Jones is facing two counts of felony first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and attempted aggravated robbery.
Police reports said Jones and Hauk attempted to rob Klundt’s residence at 1311 Delaware St. early Saturday morning. Police were called to the scene after receiving reports of gunfire in the area. Upon entering the residence, police found both men fatally injured from gun shot wounds. One victim was found in the home and the second was found on the porch of the residence.
According to police, Klundt fired the first shot at Hauk, then Jones fired at Klundt. The police found one weapon at the scene of the crime and a second weapon a block away from the residence.
A detailed investigation led police to Jones. He was brought in for questioning on June 8 and taken into custody.
The law allows a person to be charged with murder in the act of a felony even if they did not personally murder the victim. Jones can be held accountable for the death of both Klundt and Hauk.
At his court hearing, District Judge Peggy Kittle found Jones to be a danger to society. Jones is currently being tried as a juvenile and is awaiting trial at the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.
Prosecutors are exploring the option of filing motions to charge Jones as an adult.
Klundt was a sophomore at Baker University and a Lawrence High alum.
Randy Pembrook, provost at Baker University, expressed his sympathy to the family of Klundton on Tuesday.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Klundt family,” Pembrook said. “Baker University is a tightly knit community where each student is appreciated and valued. It is a tragedy to experience such a devastating loss at such a young age.”
Friends of Klundt have banded together in his remembrance, creating a Facebook group in his memory.
Stephen Theno, Lawrence resident, remembers Klundt as a quiet person with a strong interest in music.
“He never wanted to offend anyone,” Theno said. “I didn’t even know he could get mad.”
Jones’ trial is set for June 23.
