Papa Keno’s Pizzeria, 1035 Massachusetts St., reopened Friday after settling its tax debt with the state.
Papa Keno’s owed more than $170,000 in sales and withholding tax, causing the Kansas Department of Revenue to seize its assets on May 21. The restaurant was closed for nearly one month while owner Greg Keenan worked out a payment plan with the state.
“The last four weeks have been hell on earth,” Keenan said. “But I did what I needed to do, and we’re back.”
Keenan said he would be doing more hands-on work at Papa Keno’s because he cut the staff by four positions. By noon on Saturday, the recently reopened restaurant was bustling with customers while employees cleaned the rear patio and restocked the kitchen.
Despite the setback, Keenan said he was ready to revive the restaurant, which he opened 17 years ago.
“I’ve been crying with happiness, just being back in business,” Keenan said.
Keenan said he planned to reopen the Papa Keno’s location in Overland Park by Tuesday.
