Kellam D. Jones, the minor charged with the murders on Delaware street nearly three weeks ago, appeared in district court today for trial setting.
On June 7, 16-year-old Jones was charged with murder of Ronald Klundt, 20, of Lawrence.
Jones and friend Gage Hauk, 18, Mclouth, were allegedly in the process of robbing Klundt’s residences at 1311 Delaware St., when Klundt fatally shot Hauk. Jones then allegedly shot and killed Klundt.
Police questioned Jones two days after the crime after a thorough investigation. Shortly after he was taken into custody as a minor in the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.
Last week prosecutors filed paperwork in order to charge Jones as an adult. Under the Kansas Statutes a minor can be charged as an adult if they are between the ages of 14 to 17, the act was committed while in the possession of a firearm, or the minor is being charged with more than one felony.
Because the district attorney’s office is motioning for Jones to be tried as an adult, Judge Peggy Kittel has transferred Jones’ case to Division Four on the adult criminal docket. His hearing will be presided over by Judge Michael Malone. The motion hearing is scheduled for July 2.
Jones will remain in the Juvenile Detention Center unless the motion to try him as an adult is successful.
Jones court appointed attorney might also change in that time as well. His current counsel Craig Stancliffe mentioned today in court that another attorney within the same office might go forward with the trial.
