Kansas freshman running back Brian Murphy knew he wasn’t going to play much, if at all, next season because of the team’s depth in the backfield.
So Murphy, a Lawrence native who attended Free State High School, decided he wanted to transfer at the end of the spring semester. Today, it was announced that Murphy would leave Kansas for Emporia State University.
“I wanted more of an opportunity to play,” Murphy said. “With so many new people at running back, I figured it would be best if I could find somewhere I could play.”
Murphy started looking for a new school after finals were completed in May. He turned to the Kansas coaching staff for assistance and they delivered.
“The coaches found Emporia State and talked to them,” Murphy said. “Once Emporia State contacted me, we started talking and I chose them.”
Junior-college player of the year Jocques Crawford is expected to be the starting running back for the Jayhawks next season. With junior Jake Sharp, junior Angus Quigley and sophomore Camron Boyd-Anderson all fighting for playing time as well, Kansas seems set at the position.
Murphy’s twin-brother Ryan will remain with the Jayhawks and might contribute next season. The redshirt freshman could earn a spot in the defensive rotation at cornerback or return kicks.
