Position created for Latino greek organizations
Student Senate created a new senator position last night for the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO). That organization, which includes Latino fraternities and sororities, is one of two in the entire nation.

What questions do you have for your Student Senate presidential and vice-presidential candidates?
Ryan Rowan, National Pan-Hellenic Council Senator, said adding the seat would help represent the diverse opinions of greek organizations.
Senate also has separate positions for the National Pan-Hellenic Council, which represents black sororities and fraternities, the Interfraternity Council, which represents fraternities, and the Panhellenic Council, which represents sororities.
Cuts will offset energy and sustainability fee
Senate created a renewable energy and sustainability fund that would come from student fees. Students voted 90 percent in favor of the fee in last year’s Senate election.
The referendum said that campus fees could not be increased to fund the fee and that other fees would need to be reduced to compensate.
The Women’s and Non-Revenue Intercollegiate Sports Fee, the Campus Safety Fee and the Newspaper Readership Program Fee all took cuts to support the new fund.
Adam McGonigle, Student Executive Committee chairman, proposed an amendment to not take money from the Women’s and Non-Revenue Intercollegiate Sports Fee. McGonigle said Student Body President Hannah Love and Vice President Ray Wittlinger had met with Chancellor Hemenway, who said he did not want to take money away from the sports fee. Wittlinger said Hemenway was willing to consider all options when the legislation came before him.
The legislation passed without this amendment.
Senate considers changing e-mail service to Gmail
Senate is asking KU Information Technology to look at giving students Gmail in the place of Outlook Web Access e-mail accounts.
Jarrod Morgenstern, journalism senator, wrote the bill and said he had contacted Information Technology. He said Donna Liss, associate vice provost for information technology, had asked for more student input before looking at the service.
“She wanted student input and this is it,” Morgenstern said.
Google offers Google Applications to universities for free. Google Applications includes e-mail, chat, calendar and document services. If the University adopted this program, Google would host the e-mails on its servers, eliminating the need for the University to pay for servers hosting e-mails.
KJHK to receive $75,000 to fund move
Senate will give $75,000 to KJHK 90.7 FM to help fund the station’s move to the Kansas Union. The station currently broadcasts from Sudler House, also known as “the shack.” The University has given the station a deadline of Fall 2009 to move out of the building. KJHK will move to the third floor of the Kansas Union after a $242,200 remodel to house the station is completed.

Student Senate notebook
I have some major problems with several issues, let me inform you of one.
Connect is using the Student Senate to research coalition issues. For example, instead of working on a taskforce or meeting with IS themselves, Connect is using Senate (probably because they don't have the history to get an appointment in anyone's office) to do research on coalition issues. Ethical? Nope.
If one asks Jarrod Morgenstern, WiKUpedia is an initiative that goes further than a coalition platform. They say that everyone should contribute, as this will benefit all students. They even went as far as to ask for student fees for a "Summer Interest Survey." Last time I checked, student fees cannot fun coalition platforms. Think WiKUpedia doesn't apply to this? The URL begins with: www.connectku.com Again, ethical? Nope.
You can't have it both ways Jarrod Morgenstern. You can't have a coalition platform, chalk it's name next to yours on campus, and get student fees for it. I'm ready for your sugar-coated spin, Jarrod. Bring it on.
Student Senate notebook
Hokay, Ilovelamp... I can see by all your comments this morning, that you and I are gonna tango today.
So let's dance, baby, let's dance.
"Using Student Senate to research coalition issues". Now... explain something to me here. If Connect has the senators already (and they do, having members previously from United Students, Delta Force, and unaffiliated), is there some reason they should sit on a good idea? Constantly there has been outcry at KU against coalitions for coming up with an idea, and not working on it during the spring semester, because they were "too busy" shaking hands. So for Connect to come to bat, say "We have an idea, let's all talk about it..." HOT DAMN! That's AMAZING! And I can only PRAY that the other coalitions FOLLOW in this AMAZING line of thinking. Because four out of five platform issues are NOT dividing issues. Does anybody NOT want KU to have a new pool? Hell no! People are just worried about who is paying, and how it's going to happen.
On the concept of "having it both ways"... I think Connect applying to get the money for the WiKUpedia on the Summer Interest Survey is another great move. It's $20. I could pay the $20 if it comes down to it, but let's hope it doesn't. The fact that they are trying to get students who aren't in Connect to contribute... is great. Putting it on a Summer Interest Survey has ZERO effect on April's election (thus the SUMMER part of the survey). So what it is is a cry for outside input.
And if you want to input, but are afraid of the big, scary name in the URL... maybe you're willing to host the site?
kisses See you at the next silly post!

FYI, the vote for the resolution was 34-8 in favor of the resolution. There were no negative speeches given. I think Student Senate likes the resolution.

I think Old Gold Legs answered ilovelamp's point pretty well, but I'd like to add my two cents.
First off, I'm very sorry you: "have some major problems with several issues." If you'd like, you can email me at jarrodmorgenstern (at) gmail (dot) com if you want to talk interactively.
It sounds like you didn't see a copy of the resolution that we passed last night. Here is a link for you to take a closer look at it.
http://connectku.com/wiki/index.php/Resolution_for_Gmail
Additionally, if you want to learn more about our initiative you can read about Gmail for students here:
http://connectku.com/wiki/index.php/We_want_Gmail_for_KU
I feel like I'm at a disadvantage, as you've chosen not to identify yourself on Kansan.com. Do you not publicly stand by your words? Again, feel free to email me if you have any questions.
Student Senate notebook
Why would you want to pay this $20 fee now Nolan, you aren’t even a student anymore! Oh, and don't worry, there is more to come, this dance is certainly not over.
Until next time,
Student Senate notebook
Why would I pay the $20 to put the WiKUpedia on the KU Summer Interest Survey? Because I think it's a spectacular idea. And I want it to last longer than just the Connect coalition, so I want to insure it's future.
You know the most amazing thing that just dawned on me yesterday about all three of those announced Connect initiatives? While giving the most benefit to STUDENTS (as they should), they also manage to truly benefit the whole KU community. Cleaning Potter Lake as a gather for students AND their families on gamedays. Giving GMail to all of campus (and allowing alumni to keep their ku.edu addy's). And a wiki that allows KU's past, present, and future to be elaborated on by whomever should choose.
For four years I asked my fellow students to vote in elections, and when they said, "oh, I'm graduating", I always reminded them that the value of their degree lay with the future of the students.... and so here I am, with my degree, and I'm most inclined to think that student me was totally right. Sometimes a good thing for KU can spread and touch even those who have left.
Damn, Connect rocks.
Student Senate notebook
Why does Connect have to rely so heavily on help from graduated students/seniors who are going to graduate. Is that the formula for a new coalition to be successful in several years? Having the top people graduated/graduating?
Student Senate notebook
ilovelamp, Why do you not publicly stand by your thoughts? Why don't you reveal yourself, because you are clearly someone in the know.
Student Senate notebook
Hmm... why would the input of seniors ever be important... its not like they have spent 4 years on this campus. No. I think most organizations rely on their senior most members. Senior input is essential to the longterm success of ANY organization. Learn to think through your arguments ilovelamp... spend less time watching anchorman.
Student Senate notebook
oldgoldlegs needs a life... sorry ms. witty.. your term as senate comms. director ended long ago. time to move on.
Student Senate notebook
Who are you ilovelamp? This is me, calling you, a coward.
Student Senate notebook
Here's what we can infer: ilovelamp is involved with Senate. You don't post on these so much if you're not. They are clearly a United Students supporter, given how often they criticize Connect (doing it on the UDK website doesn't seem to be SoL's style). They've been around long enough to know Nolan, a position he held a few years ago, and who his spouse is.
That should narrow it down a little.
