Taking two of three games from Missouri last weekend would have all but assured Kansas a spot in next week’s Big 12 Tournament. Instead, the Jayhawks only won one but still control their own destiny.
The Tigers took game one from the Jayhawks 5-3 on Friday behind a seven-inning, five strike out performance from pitcher Aaron Crow.
Saturday’s game was rained out, which made for a Sunday double header. Sophomore second baseman Robby Price hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Jayhawks a 7-6 victory in game two of the series.
But Price sat out the second game of the doubleheader and without him, the offense was all but gone. The pitching wasn’t productive, either. Missouri pounded Kansas pitchers T.J. Walz and Hiarali Garcia for six runs in the first four innings and breezed to a 12-1 blowout victory.
Kansas currently ranks seventh in the Big 12 Conference at 9-15. Only eight teams advance to the Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City next week. The Jayhawks are a game ahead of the ninth-place Kansas State Wildcats, who they play three games against next weekend. If Kansas can win two of three against Kansas State, it will clinch a spot in the tournament.
